Relay For Life - April 9th, 2010

Postby techpimp » Thu Apr 01, 2010 8:53 am

Whoops, time got away from us on this one and we are posting it a little late. //sorry

Anyhow...
Event Date: April 9, 2010
Event Location: Ocoee High School
Event Schedule: Walk Begins at 6:00pm

We are going to be presenting a BIG CHECK at some point in the evening from the funds we raised at this year's Jeepers For Charity event. Remember, our team's page is here: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/jeepersforcharity It is not too late to donate! Look at how close we are.

Everyone is invited to attend. We have TWO camp grounds reserved for us so there is plenty of room.

Bring a pop-up tent, folding chairs, grills, whatever, real tents if you think you'll be able to sleep, and stuff to stay busy. Poker table?

Stay the whole time or come and go as you please.

Our theme is 'A day on the rocks'.
We cannot drive our Jeeps on their football field/track so need to be a little creative. Maybe if you have a power wheels we could get two of those out there to 'stack' (funny I know) and if you have some cool rock crawling RC's we could mess around with those too with some obstacles or whatever.

I think I'm going to smoke some Jalapeños amongst whatever else I decide to grill.

Here is more information:
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events and 18 hours in length.

Although every Relay For Life is different, there are certain traditions at all Relays, no matter where they are held. These traditions help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back.

Celebrate - The Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are creating a world with more birthdays like those of each individual on the track.

Remember - The Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence.

Fight Back - Fight Back Through Fundraising
Last, there is a chance to fight back against cancer through fundraising. In addition to what the fundraising teams do before the Relay, there are endless fundraising opportunities available onsite. From food, face painters, crafts and more, Relay teams will have plenty of ways for participants and visitors to support the fight against cancer.

No matter where you are, there’s a place for you at Relay and you can make a difference today by signing up online to start your own team or by simply making a donation.

Thanks to Relay participants, we are creating a world with more birthdays a world where cancer can’t claim another year of anyone’s life.

I might be able to come out for awhile, I'll be in Fruitland Park until about 8pm, but could come down there after to check it out.
I was a little slow on the uptake, I knew the Jeepers for Charity event benefited the Relay, did not realize we were attending the real relay- and I had already signed up with another team in Lake Mary.
That said, I will do my best to come hang out for awhile, I can't sleep anyway, might as well come and walk a few laps!

It's more/less the way money filters into the American Cancer Society. Our participation in the actual 'relay' is completely optional as the JFC is like our own Jeeping version of the relay. However, making a showing does show the rest of the non-Jeeping community TOJC's 2010 commitment to support the lives of those affected by cancer.

Oh, and April 6th (tues of next week) I'll be picking up the club's free shirts.

Linda and I will be there; most likely camping over night. I'll also bring my RC rock crawler.

I will be there celebrating as a recent cancer survivor and looking forward to a great event. The luminaria ceremony is really touching.
Everyone should try to donate in the names of those friends or relatives who have been touched by cancer and to remember loved ones that have been lost to this horrible disease.
